fishtail braids on a sweltering afternoon

saturday i threw on the 50s flea market find from a while back, plus a belt and shoes thrifted from salvation army, and ran myself down the road to the farm house for some photographs, but it was so sweltering and my shoes are a bit too big on me, so i only stayed for a bit until i ran myself back home to sit in the air conditioning!

i've lived on this street my whole life; and i'm extremely lucky to live in a protected historic district so that the fields next to my home can't be touched by new development. i pray that they never let those awful yuppie homes move in around here, and that the land stays protected for as long as it can be! this seems to be one of the last standing old farm homes in the area, and i want it kept that way! this is the home of my neighbors, the one's who have been on this land farther back than i even know. they're both in their 90s now, but i still see them out once in a while

i'm glad that i grew up here as opposed to a big neighborhood, although when i was young i wished for just that. i can always move to a stuffy, overcrowded area, but i'll likely never find another place like my childhood home (and certainly not for a reasonable price!)

as promised, here's a little photo representation of the wonderful hats i found in gettysburg!
first off, a velvet and black net one that i adore! a bit funereal but in a good way

then there's this sweet off white headband type one, with chiffon flowers and a caged top. totally cool

then there's this plastic flower headband with net, also pretty cool! and all of these were less than $4 each!

and last but not least...a boater hat!

i know i'm super late on this bandwagon, but i've FINALLY acquired my own boater, and the best part is that it was handmade by the shop owner i bought it from and it was considerably cheaper than any vintage one i've come across! win win situation here.

thank god for salvation

i went to the salvation army for 2 seconds today and managed to not only find a pair of t-strap heels in my size, but i also got a coach purse, a pair of 70s sandals for the store, and a sweet little 70s house dress too! last time i went in i didn't get anything, which is a rarity for me as usually i leave with at least $20 worth of stuff to sell or to keep, but today was like gold. thrifting gods smile down upon me, i am not worthy...

it's long weekend (woot!) so tonight i'm going to attempt to make myself a pair of high-waisted beach shorts with this new blue fabric i got at a tag sale today. i'm pretty much a noob at sewing; i've made five or so simple skirts and one not-so-successful pair of shorts before, and never on my own. i'm crossing my fingers that i remember how to sew with my other, clunkier machine! please please don't let me screw it up, haha
